Recently, under the witness of Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and senior government officials, Goldwind's first wind power project in Egypt - the Gulf of Suez II (GOSII) Wind Farm of Red Sea Wind Energy - achieved full grid connection and officially commenced commercial operations. As the largest operational single-site wind power project in Africa, the GOSII project entered commercial operation six months ahead of schedule, setting a new benchmark for accelerated development in Egypt's wind energy sector.

According to a report released by Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA), the country's total installed wind power capacity is projected to reach 12.75GW by 2030, underscoring its vast potential as an emerging wind energy market. As a flagship new energy project under the Belt and Road Initiative, the early completion of the GOSII project will play a critical role in supporting Egypt's Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy 2035, expediting the country's energy transition.

Located in the Gulf of Suez region along the Red Sea coast, the GOSII project features a total installed capacity of 500MW, with 84 units of GW165-6.0MW wind turbines, making it Africa's largest operational single-site wind farm in both single-unit capacity and total capacity. The project is expected to generate 2 billion kWh of electricity annually, sufficient to power over 1 million local households and reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 1.5 million tons per year.

Given the region's harsh environmental conditions - characterized by extreme summer temperatures exceeding 40°C, frequent high winds, dust storms, and severe weather - the GW165-6.0MW turbines were custom-designed for high-temperature resistance and sandstorm protection. Innovations include advanced dust-proof technology, upgraded generator insulation, and optimized cooling systems to ensure reliable operation in extreme environments.

Throughout project execution, the Goldwind Egypt project team, in collaboration with local and international partners, overcame numerous challenges with innovative construction solutions. Leveraging the "low-wind season" for efficient construction, the team ensured safe and high-quality delivery, achieving a remarkable record of 5.5 million work hours with zero safety incidents, demonstrating the project's HSE management level. By consistently surpassing schedule milestones, the project significantly shortened its construction timeline and improved client returns, completing the installation of the first 46 turbines 20 days ahead of schedule in April 2024.

This milestone was jointly witnessed by Red Sea Wind Energy CEO Anthony Watson and Goldwind International General Manager Wang Hai. Mr. Watson stated on-site, "We are thrilled by the project's success. Goldwind, the first Chinese wind turbine manufacturer to enter Egypt, has proven its capabilities through its outstanding performance on the GOSII project."

The project's first wind turbine was successfully commissioned and connected to the grid in September 2024. The Goldwind Egypt team ensured a seamless transition across substation energization, turbine commissioning, and grid operation. This achievement earned high praise from Hans Bruins, Engineering Director of Red Sea Wind Energy.

By December 2024, 306MW of turbine capacity had been connected to the grid four months ahead of plan.

Building on these achievements, the Goldwind team worked closely with clients and construction teams to deeply study Egypt's grid access requirements, and proactively develop technical solutions for frequency, harmonics, and other integration challenges. As a result, the project passed grid testing on the first attempt, achieving full grid connection six months ahead of schedule and setting a new benchmark for the Egyptian wind power industry.

Goldwind will continue to leverage the Suez Gulf wind farm as a strategic anchor point, increase R&D investment, and develop advanced products tailored for high-temperature, sandy environments. With a strengthened full-lifecycle service system, the company remains committed to driving global energy transformation and contributing green momentum to the global carbon neutrality goal.
